Senator Donald P. Dewitte | Illinois State Senator

Senator Don DeWitte has announced the kickoff of his 2024 spring/summer events calendar with a FREE document shredding event scheduled for Saturday, May 4 in St. Charles. In partnership with State Rep. Dan Ugaste, the event will take place at the Salvation Army Tri-City Corps Community Center. DeWitte encourages participants to bring their sensitive documents for shredding and non-perishable food items for donation. Regarding the event logistics, DeWitte stated, "A shred truck will be on site... from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM or until the truck is full."

Expressing his concerns about a proposed legislation in Springfield, Senator DeWitte highlighted the potential negative impacts it could have on private landowners in Illinois. The bill, known as Senate Bill 771, aims to grant the state extensive authority over private land, replicating powers taken away from the EPA by the U.S. Supreme Court's Sackett v. EPA decision. DeWitte emphasized, "I am strongly opposed to the legislation... it infringes on property rights and would create yet another burdensome and costly regulatory process for citizens."

In another legislative update, Senator DeWitte, as the Chief Co-Sponsor, has supported a bill introduced by Senator Steve McClure to prevent governments from charging property tax penalties to deceased individuals. The bill, Senate Bill 2832, passed the Senate on April 9 and is now awaiting action in the House of Representatives. DeWitte explained the purpose of the bill, stating, "Senate Bill 2832 would allow for the estate of a deceased individual to apply for a waiver... that would prevent interest and penalties from being charged on delinquent property taxes."
