The Illinois General Assembly has commenced its regular session, with lawmakers already diving into important issues such as the immigration crisis and the state's assault weapons ban. Governor JB Pritzker's approach to the immigration crisis, which bypasses the legislature, has raised concerns about transparency and the allocation of taxpayer funds. The session will resume on February 6 at the Capitol.

One significant topic that lawmakers have addressed is the state's assault weapons ban. The Joint Committee on Administrative Rules (JCAR), which includes Senator Don DeWitte, met to discuss new permanent rules proposed by the Illinois State Police (ISP). There have been concerns about the vagueness of the current rules, which could lead to confusion among gun owners. While a motion to prohibit the new permanent rules failed, a motion to object to the rules was successful. ISP must respond to the Committee's objection before the regulations can be adopted.

Senator Don DeWitte is also organizing a Valentines for Seniors program, collecting cards and well-wishes to be distributed to nursing homes and care facilities in the 33rd District. Valentines can be dropped off at Senator DeWitte's offices or mailed directly.

In a move to provide a more convenient and cost-effective travel experience, the Illinois Tollway is replacing traditional I-PASS transponders with stickers. These stickers, which use radio frequency identification, will be available by the end of January at customer service centers, select stores, and during the Chicago Auto Show.

Senator DeWitte and his Republican colleagues are demanding that Governor Pritzker reverse proposed cuts to service hours for Illinois adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities who live in group homes. The cuts, amounting to approximately $87.7 million in state funding, would significantly impact vulnerable citizens who rely on state assistance. Senator DeWitte emphasized the need for lawmakers to work together to prevent these cuts from happening.

Senator DeWitte also serves on a panel studying the decline of local journalism outlets in Illinois. The panel presented its findings, including policy recommendations, at a recent press conference. While recognizing the importance of revitalizing local news sources, Senator DeWitte urged caution in how the legislature approaches this issue, emphasizing the importance of free speech.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is seeking instructors for its 2024 summer fishing clinics through the Urban Fishing Program. These temporary positions are ideal for individuals interested in teaching fishing skills and ecology. The deadline to apply is approaching quickly.

Lastly, Illinois saw record-breaking recreational cannabis sales in 2023, surpassing $1.63 billion. While sales to out-of-state residents decreased, sales to Illinois residents increased by 14%. However, the high prices and taxes associated with cannabis in Illinois have driven some customers to neighboring states.

As the legislative session continues, Senator Don DeWitte remains committed to addressing important issues and advocating for the needs of his constituents.
