Grove Ave. Elgin Sports Complex709 Sports WayThe annual "Pumpkin Smash" is a way for residents to sustainably dispose of their fall pumpkins and other gourds while having fun. Residents may smash their pumpkins or drop them off at no cost. Volunteers will be onsite to assist with moving pumpkins from vehicles to the collection container. Plain, clean pumpkins of any size will be accepted. Acrylic paint is acceptable, however, all decorations, such as yarn, stickers, plastic, glitter and candles must be removed from the pumpkins.
Pumpkins are 90% water, which is great for soil, but not so good in landfills. Composting pumpkins and keeping them out of landfills helps:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- Create a natural fertilizer for soils.
This event is made possible through a collaborative effort between the City of Elgin's Sustainability Commission, WM (formerly known as Waste Management), School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education (SCARCE) and the Downtown Neighborhood Association (DNA). More than 28 tons of pumpkins have been collected since 2016.If interested in volunteering for the event contact Sustainability Analyst Kristin Youngmeyer at 847-931-5615.
