Illinois Rep. Dan Ugaste issued a statement thanking authorities who stopped a crime spree that led to the death of the suspect and a police K-9 unit after the suspect carjacked a vehicle and Aurora.
“Thank you to the Kane County Sheriff’s deputies who worked to protect the law-abiding citizens of Kane County on a heavily traveled road near rush hour," Ugaste (R-65) said in the statement issued on his website. "Knowing the suspect had been on a crime spree for 48 hours prior to the incident further presses our need to deter crime across our state to protect our communities and law enforcement. Illinois needs to do more to reduce crime and prevent these events from happening and threatening our neighbors.”
According to WGN, the crime spree started after the unnamed suspect carjacked a vehicle in Aurora and was spotted in South Elgin. The Kane County Sheriff's Office used a vehicle to stop the suspect, and deployed Hudson, a K-9 unit, to subdue the suspect, who showed a weapon. In an exchange of gunfire, both the suspect and Hudson were killed, WGN reported.
According to a release by the Kane County Sheriff's Office, authorities were forced to use a vehicle to stop the suspect in Geneva after an attempt by deputies to stop the stolen Honda Accord, that resulted in a chase which ended in Batavia. The release also noted that the suspect had fled from deputies days earlier.
The sheriff's office set up a memorial service for Hudson at 11 a.m. on June 1 at Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove. It will be streamed live on the organization's Facebook page as well. Hudson was Dutch Shepherd, four years old, who was enacted into duty on Oct. 16, 2020. During his career, he assisted federal law enforcement agencies in "the detection and seizures of over 100 kilograms of illicit narcotics. Hudson also assisted with the seizures of over $5,000,000 in U.S. currency that was determined to be proceeds from illicit activities." He was part of more than 100 tracking incidents for both suspects and missing individuals, the sheriff's office stated.
Ugaste has served in the Illinois General Assembly since January 2019, his biography states.
