GOP state Rep. Martin McLaughlin is calling further attention to a new Wirepoints report that finds that the majority of students read at a significantly low-grade level across Illinois.
In a recent Facebook post, McLaughlin shared the updated literacy stats in Illinois. In addition to the literacy reports, the math grade levels are also underwhelming.
"At 622 schools across Illinois, only 1 out of 10 kids or less can read at grade level," McLaughlin said.
Researchers also found that the numbers are even more unsatisfactory when it comes to math, highlighting that only 1 out of 10 kids or less can do math at grade level in 930 schools, spanning more than a quarter of all schools in the state, according to Wirepoints.
However, the Illinois State Board of Education believes that a portion of the schools deserves praise for achieving good results.
Despite the glaring shortcomings in core subjects, researchers note that many of these schools are rated “commendable” by the Illinois State Board of Education, adding that such distinction rates as the second highest of four “accountability” ratings a school can receive.
