At the Jan. 23 meeting of the Village of Montgomery Board, police Chief Philip Smith introduced three new officers to the board. Smith said all three of them are currently in field training status and upon completion would become full-fledged officers.
Damien Woods came to the department from a police force in Gary, Indiana, though he was born and raised in Homewood, Illinois. He just married his wife in December, and though she was unable to attend the ceremony, his parents and in-laws watched him be sworn in. Kane Culver attended Western Illinois University and received a degree in Justice Administration and Law Enforcement. He was sworn in in front of his mother and father, brother, and girlfriend. Kevin Lessmer also attended Western Illinois University before joining the police academy. He brought his fiancée who is also a police officer, his mother and two sisters.
The board also recognized Atrevete Confections' induction to the Illinois Made program. The sweets shop is one of 30 small businesses in the state to receive the award this year. The board was told Atrevete Confections makes some of the best macaroons in the state, right in Montgomery Village.

“Essentially, this puts Jackie and her shop on the map as a highlight and a tourist attraction for the state of Illinois right here in Montgomery," Village President Matt Brolley said. "On their print and digital marketing on EnjoyIllinois.com, Atrevete Confections will now be featured as a tourist destination. Jackie, you are so deserving of this award from the decadent pastries, macaroons, handcrafted coffee drinks, teas, pies, crepes and my wife's favorite, the raspberry pistachio croissants. We had it this weekend and she said, 'Please don't ever change the recipe on that.' So with that, congratulations and welcome to the Illinois Makers Class of 2022.”
In other business, the board discussed giving La Chaquita Retail Center a liquor license.
The council will meet again at 7 p.m. on Feb. 13 at the Village Hall on 200 North River St.
