North Aurora, IL – Running for re-election in one of the most hotly contested races for the Illinois House in the Fox Valley, State Representative Keith Wheeler reminded voters this week about his voting record as a champion for women in the Illinois House.
Legislation cosponsored by Wheeler to expand health insurance coverage of mammograms was highlighted as Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to an end. The bipartisan legislation was signed into law by Governor Pritzker as Public Act 101-580 in August 2019 and provided critical access to screenings that could save tens of thousands of lives per year in Illinois.
Recognizing the need to require insurance plans to offer coverage for hormone therapy treatment for women who have undergone a hysterectomy, Representative Wheeler again delivered for women’s healthcare. His legislation, which goes into effect January 1, 2023, was signed into law as Public Act102-804 and required coverage for hormone therapy for women following a hysterectomy.
“Women that I know in my own life have made the decision to protect their health by choosing to undergo a hysterectomy, from which they face the often-difficult physical challenges of adjusting to a new normal,” Rep. Wheeler said. “With this new law, we will ensure that coverage for hormone therapy will be offered to these brave women to help them start the next chapter of their lives with the full range of health care options they need and deserve.”
Wheeler has also kept his focus on quality-of-life issues impacting families. Under Wheeler-sponsored legislation signed into law as Public Act 102-453, expectant mothers in their third trimester of pregnancy may be provided temporary disabled parking placards to increase accessibility.
To ensure access to safe drinking water for Montgomery, Oswego, and Yorkville communities, Wheeler passed legislation to allow the communities to join the DuPage Water Commission and gain access to water supply from Lake Michigan.
“Access to fresh, safe drinking water is essential for every community,” said Rep. Wheeler. “This law ensures Montgomery, Oswego, and Yorkville are able to transition their water supply from a depleting aquifer source to Lake Michigan to provide families and businesses with a long-term, sustainable, and affordable drinking water source for years to come.”
Wheeler’s proven record in Springfield is one of building bipartisan support around improving the quality of life for women and families across the Fox Valley. Wheeler was recently praised for his commitment to bipartisanship by the Daily Herald Editorial Board, which strongly endorsed his candidacy for re-election to the Illinois House in District 83.
