Judge John Noverini, candidate for Illinois Supreme Court, has issued the following press release:

Carpentersville, IL – Judge John Noverini, a candidate for the Illinois Supreme Court, says the recent ruling on mask mandates at schools should remind Illinois residents of the importance of the judicial branch in our system of government.

“Judges do not make law, but they do make important decisions on the constitutionality of bills approved by the legislative branch and signed into law by the executive branch,” Noverini said. “Our system of governance provides checks and balances and ensures that no one branch of government has total authority. Our freedoms and liberties hinge on these checks and balances on the use of political power.”

Sangamon County Circuit Court Judge Raylene this week sided with parents who sued numerous school districts across the state over mask mandates at schools. There are many people excited about this ruling and others who are angry, but Noverini said the independence of our judiciary is an essential part of our system of government.

“Whatever side of the debate you are on – I think we can all agree that we have a great system of government that allows all sides to be heard,” Noverini said. “If a trial court judge rules against a party in a dispute - the losing side has an opportunity to appeal that decision in Appellate Court and sometimes those cases can find their way to the Illinois Supreme Court. We need these checks and balances to ensure the rights of our citizens are protected.”

Noverini said judicial races often lack the intensity of races for the state house or for Governor and Lt. Governor, but it is important for citizens to take these races seriously.

“Here in Illinois, we vote for judges. It is not a panel of unelected bureaucrats appointing judges. It is you the people making these decisions,” Noverini said. “Given the magnitude of the cases our courts consider – voters should take judicial races seriously.”

Judge Noverini and his wife, Saray Rodriguez Noverini, are long-time residents of Kane County. Judge Noverini was first elected to the bench in 2008 and during his judicial tenure has served in both criminal and civil courtrooms. His judicial experience includes having served as the Presiding Judge of the Family Law Division, Presiding Judge of the Criminal Law Division, and Presiding Judge of Probate, Guardianship, Traffic and Mental Health Courts.

A life-long Illinoisan, Noverini is a graduate of the Moody Bible Institute. He earned his Master of Arts in History from Northeastern Illinois University and a Juris Doctor from IIT/Chicago Kent College of Law.
