Four new collapsible grocery carts, donated by the Batavia Rotary Club, were put into use for the first time on Friday, Feb. 4. The service club presented the carts when they volunteered at the mobile Pop-Up Food Pantry at Mercy Housing Batavia Apartments.
At a prior mobile pantry event, Rotarian Tony Winter recognized the need for the carts to help residents transport their groceries to their apartments. Lynn Queen, resident service coordinator assistant for the apartments was thrilled with the donation.
“These carts will greatly help the residents,” Ms. Queen commented. “Residents need to cross the expansive campus after visiting the pantry, which can be difficult to manage while carrying heavy pantry items.”
The carts will be stored at Batavia Apartments for continued use on the campus.
The morning’s Pop-Up Food Pantry is a service of the Aurora Area Interfaith Pantry and their partner, Calvary Church of Naperville. The Batavia Apartments stop was one of many they coordinate monthly throughout a five-county area, according to Becky Dunnigan, Donor Relations Manager at the Aurora Pantry.
Batavia Rotarians who helped pass out food to the residents were Teri Dykhuis, Bob Hubbard, Peter Lowe, Margaret Perreault, Tom VonLunen, and Tony Winter. Assistance was also provided by Sergeant Salvador Rodriguez and the Kane County Sheriff’s Department as well as many firefighters from the Batavia Fire Department.
