Illinois state Sen. Don DeWitte (R-St. Charles) is applauding the passage of Senate Bill 2415 that would require financial institutions to offer a basic checking account to senior citizens.

“To the bill, I want to let everybody know that because this was an unfortunate oversight by the previous chairman, the taxpayers in Kane County are in fact entitled to this,” DeWitte told lawmakers on the Senate floor as the bill was still being debated. "I would urge an aye vote.”

SB 2415 seeks to amend the Consumer Deposit Account Act, more specifically making a change to a section related to checking accounts for senior citizens. The bill has now been referred to the Assignments Committee.

Serving the 33rd District since 2018, DeWitte sits on the Appropriations II, Committee of the Whole, Education, Revenue, Local Government, Telecommunications & Info Technology, Transportation and Government Accountability committees.

DeWitte recently vowed to spend more time in his district speaking with constituents and learning more about what they consider to be the community’s most pressing issues.

“When we return to Springfield in mid-April, we will be in session nearly every day over the final seven weeks of the 2021 spring session,” he recently posted on his website. “I will spend this time tending to local constituent issues and attending virtual committee hearings.”

One issue that has already captured DeWitte’s attention is the growing debate about the Democrat-controlled Senate deciding to move ahead on redistricting despite Census Bureau data not being readily available.

“Democrats are claiming that citizens can submit their own legislative map proposals using a tool and portal that is provided by the legislature, but neither the tool nor portal have been available for the public to use because of the redistricting process’ fast-pace and delays with the new census data,” he added.

The 33rd District includes all or parts of Batavia, Crystal Lake, East Dundee, Elgin, Gilberts, Lakewood, Pingree Grove, Sleepy Hollow, South Elgin, Wayne, Geneva, St. Charles, West Dundee, Hampshire, Huntley, Carpentersville, Lake in the Hills and Algonquin.
