Western Kane County GOP retweeted Rep. Steve Scalise’s comments on the passing of a bill that he claims bans voter ID with the quote, “Tell me Dems aren’t scared!”
Democrats in the House of Representatives have passed HR-1, or For the People Act, that would allow voters without government-issued ID to sign an affidavit they they are eligible to vote.
In passing the bill, The Washington Post said that the House is “advancing a centerpiece of the Democratic voting rights agenda.”
Sponsors of the bill say that voter ID requirements are a burden to certain voters, the homeless, Native Americans, and those who live in low-income communities who cannot afford the costs associated with getting a government-issued ID. HR-1 does not exactly “ban” voter ID, it is just another way of helping citizens vote by providing a sworn statement that they are eligible to vote.
Rep. Steve Scalise denounced the bill, saying “Every single American should be outraged by this.”
Some provisions on the bill are: automatic voter registration online, allowing voters to change their address and other information at the polling places, making early voting mandatory, nationwide voting by mail and without a photo ID.
