City of Aurora Veterans Advisory Council Met Sept. 9.

Here is the minutes provided by the council:

1. Call to Order Will Hart called the meeting to order at 5:41 p.m. 

2. Pledge of Allegiance Will Hart lead the Council in the Pledge 

3. Moment of Silence 

4. Roll Call 6 members (a quorum) were present. Those in attendance were BC, JC, RF, WH, KL, CS, and CN (AOC Liaison). 

5. Mission Statement Randy Fisher read the AVAC Mission statement. 

6. Acceptance of Previous Minutes The council voted to accept the August, 2020 minutes. Ken Leask made the motion and it was seconded by Curtis Spivey.. 

7. Public Comment Julie Christman, President and CEO and Greg Probst, Vice-President of the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley presented information about the Foundation. The Foundation is the banker for the five AVAC funds. They went over the funds we currently  have with CFFRV. They also talked about other opportunities and services the Foundation provides. They are a great partner for AVAC and a great resource for the community. 

8. Treasurer’s Report In August there was no income or expenses for AVAC. The balances in the funds remained at the end of July balances.  

9. Committee Report Out

a. Scholarship Fund  

a. Scholarship Fund There was no activity with the scholarship. In the upcoming months the City of Aurora should send their annual contribution. The deadline for scholarship applications will be in January. 

b. AVAC Web / Social Media Curtis Spivey reported that the webpage and the  media resources continue to grow. 

c. Service Dogs No report 

d. Owned Businesses/Discount List & Placards no report  

e. Memorial Bricks 6 bricks are now ready for installation. The council talked about having a short socially distanced ceremony with one or multiple audiences on or around Veterans Day. More information and a final plan will be discussed at October’s meeting. The ordering process on the website was also discussed and Curtis Spivey will work with the foundation on making the process more user friendly. 

10. COA Liaison Report Out - Chuck Nelson Chuck brought up the issue from last month concerning that the finance report balances are not published in the official minutes. After discussion the following motion was passed. Monthly finance reports will include a balance for each fund to be  published in the minutes. Curtis Spivey made the motion and Bruce Cairns seconded the motion. All six council members voted yes. The Council felt it made AVAC more transparent. Chuck Nelson mentioned that the City is going to collect attendance records from each Council. Chuck said the City is  pleased that AVAC is having in person meetings once again.  

11. Upcoming Events September 18th is MIA/POW Day and the Truemper American Legion Post 1944 will have a short ceremony at the monument in Phillips Park at 6 p.m. 

12. New Business  

Veteran Assistance was again a topic. Scientel has agreed that their donation from their golf outing to AVAC can be used for Veteran’s Assistance this year. Will Hart and Randy Fisher will set up a meeting with the Director of the Kane County Veterans Assistance Commission prior to the AVAC October meeting. Four members of the Council will represent AVAC at the  golf outing next Monday.

15. Next meeting is October 14th, 2020 . 

16. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 7 p.m. Motion by Curtis Spivey and  seconded by Bruce Cairns.
