For Jeanette Ward, the people of the 25th District have spoken, and the republican senate candidate who dropped her race to incumbent state Sen. Karina Villa by less than a point has heard them loud and clear.
“Tax reduction is the main thing to the people of this district and they sent that message loud and clear by voting down Gov. Pritzker and Mike Madigan’s tax plan,” Ward told the Kane County Reporter, “They do not want any new taxes.”
Ward stressed she isn’t sure what the future holds in terms of ever being a candidate again, but she wants voters to know she thinks she’s much more in tune with their values and priorities than Villa seems to be.
“My opponent, given her voting history, doesn’t seem to want to limit taxes,” said Ward.
“People clearly voted that down, but, at the same time, they voted for people that increased their taxes. It’s just sometimes hard to know what voters are thinking," said Ward.
Ward vowed that won’t change her commitment or desire to continue fighting for the community going forward.
“I will always defend freedom, faith and family, whether as an elected official or private citizen,” she said, “and freedom, faith and family are under siege in Illinois. I wouldn’t rule anything out at this point and time.”
Throughout her campaign, Ward made her opposition to the progressive tax championed by the governor a central theme of her platform, arguing that there was no way it would only mean higher rates for the state’ richest residents.
Ultimately, the measure that required approval from 60% of those who voted on the issue or a majority of those who voted in the election overall was roundly defeated.
