Coach hopes students will get to play this season, but says school hasn't 'made a decision yet'

Lance Huber, boy's Varsity Basketball coach for Dundee-Crown High Schooin Carpentersville, hopes the athlete will be able to play basketball this year.

Huber said the school hasn't decided yet regarding the Illinois High School Association's (IHSA) decision to go against Gov. J.B. Pritzker's orders ongoing ahead with basketball season.

"Well, I guess I would say that I was in favor of it because it was going to give kids the opportunity to play basketball," said Huber in an interview with Kane County Reporter

"And I think a lot of kids need that … in their lives right now," said Huber.

Huber said the school has not came out with an official decision yet.

"Well, right now we’re not really … they haven’t made a decision yet," said Huber, "I don’t think they’re going to let us play, but I’m just hoping they’ll let us practice."

"One of the things I think people need to realize is, you know, you can postpone stuff," said Huber, "I think that if you’re a restaurant owner or a bar owner you can, not that I am one of those, but … you can get another job, but these kids aren’t going to get the opportunity to be in high school again. So, it’s frustrating, I think, for those kids."

Last month, the IHSA decided to go against Gov. J.B. Pritzker's orders and continue with the season, Patch.com reported.

"The Illinois High School Association Board of Directors made the decision today to continue with the IHSA basketball season as scheduled in 2020-21," said the IHSA Board in a statement, "In August, the Board slated basketball to take place from November to February based on the Illinois Department of Public Health assigning a medium risk level to the sport. The IHSA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee offered additional mitigations, such as masks during play and social distancing on benches, that the SMAC believed would allow basketball to be played safely."
