City of Geneva Natural Resources Committee A Subcommittee of the Strategic Advisory Committee met Oct. 7.

Here is the minutes provided by the subcommittee:

1. Meeting called to order at 7:00 pm by Jay Womack.

2. Geneva NRC Members Present: Jay Womack, Stephanie O’hara, Mel Rooney, Kelvin Limbrick, and Anna Kresler (GHS Liaison). Absent: Tom Dickinson, Bill Doeckel, John Frankenthal, Rachel Ratos, Carrie Carter, Steve Matravers, Adam McMillen, Jeanine McMillen, Dan Ludwig.

3. Amendments to the Agenda. None.

4. Approval of last meeting Minutes. Stephanie O’hara moved and seconded by Kelvin Limbrick to approve the September minutes.

5. Active Projects:

• Earth Day Event was cancelled for 2020

• Eastside Fire Station Natural Landscaping Project

i. Dan Ludwig cancelled the plants for Spring 2020.

• River Clean-up Day

i. The event was held on September 19, 2020, 9 to noon and was attended by approximately 40 people. Small groups were formed and headed north and south, on both sides of the river, to pick up garbage. The day was a huge success, large piles of garbage were collected.

ii. Social distancing protocols were adhered to for the duration of the event.

• Rain Barrels

i. Have four terra cotta in storage.

• Greening Geneva

i. Jay met Nate Landers from public works to review the tree locations that will be planted this year. There will be three trees planted in the parkway along 3rd, five tree grates in front of ACK, three tree grates in front of the post office, and one tree grate at Niche. Wasco will plant the trees the second week of October.

ii. The invoice for the trees will be paid through the Geneva Park District Foundation from the communal funds from Wine, Cheese, and Trees.

• Wine, Cheese and Trees.

i. Because of Covid, the NRC discussed keeping WCT in February and to hold the event as a virtual event. Members will look into other events that have been held and will report on them at the next meeting.

ii. It was agreed that the live auction could be expanded and conducted that night via an on-line platform.

iii. Wines could be arranged for pick up thru the Geneva Wine Cellar and they would be presented and discussed the night of the event.

• TreeHab USA

i. The program is asleep for now.

• Fabyan Preserve Stewardship

i. The first work day was October 3rd. Jay developed and sent out the schedule of dates.

ii. Battle of the Brush Piles will most likely not happen this year due to Covid and the number of people it draws.

• Elm Park Restoration

i. Progress is being made. Kelvin will send out a work day schedule.

ii. Kelvin will look into purchasing 5 hand saws for his workday. The cost will be presented at the next meeting.

• NRC Facebook and Instagram

i. Postings are being made. • Tree Ordinance

i. We are waiting on the City for revisions. 

6. New Initiatives

• Garner support and funds for recycle bins for downtown.

o Stephanie and Mel are planning to take a tour of Lakeshore Recycling facility. They will find out more about recycling do’s and don’ts. Jay asked if they could ask about hard hat’s being recycled.

o Mel and Stephane have been emailing with Mayor Burns about a recycling initiative. They reported that the Mayor and City Council are interested and are looking at improving the 3rd Street containers as well.

• Create an education piece to reduce the use of straws, plastic, and even Styrofoam in restaurants and stores.

i. Mel and Stephanie will contact the City to see if we can have a discussion about this educational piece and how it may be brought to stores and restaurants.

7. Treasurer’s Report – There was no Treasurers Report.

8. Additional business – none.

9. Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 8:15. Mel Rooney moved and Kelvin Limbrick seconded to close the meeting. Respectfully submitted,
