Is Hirschauer a "fake teacher"?: Records do not support house candidate's "educator" background claims

Maura Hirschauer’s campaign has been touting the activist as a former teacher turned stay at home mom.

While records indicate Hirschauer held a substitute teaching license in Colorado from 2006 it expired in 2009.

Hirschauer posted on her campaign website that she worked as a teacher in Portola Valley, Calif. Yet the only evidence of this is….her campaign website.

Records searches in California do not turn up teaching credentials under Maura Hirschauer or Maura Welch, her maiden name.

A FOIA request sent to the only elementary school in Portola Valley returned no results under Hirschauer’s name.

Hirschauer's case can be compared to that of U.S. Rep Lauren Underwood (D-IL) who claimed to be a nurse. Under further scrutiny Underwood’s claim did not hold up.

Hirschauer’s is expected to questioned on whether she is a "fake teacher" when she faces off against Republican candidate Laura Curtis in a “meet the candidate”, a North Aurora Village Trustee, owns an appraisal firm and is a realtor.

House District 49 is currently held by state Rep. Karina Villa (D-West Chicago). Villa is opting to run for the Illinois Senate’s 25th District.

Hirschauer has been receiving cash from outsiders, including donations from embattled House Speaker Michael Madigan she has refused to return.

Madigan is under investigation after being implicated in a bribery scandal.

House Majority Leader Greg Harris (D-Chicago) also recently gave Hirschauer $57,800.
