CITY OF ELGIN: A Message from Mayor Kaptain

Interviewmedia

City of Elgin issued the following announcement on June 3.

"Last evening’s peaceful protest at Elgin’s police station demonstrates what this community has been doing for some time now. We come together during painful and difficult times to engage in meaningful conversations. Our community-wide gatherings⏤whether occurring in meeting rooms, places of worship or on the streets and sidewalks⏤have been and continue to be the hallmark of this great city. We use these conversations to educate and enlighten ourselves, and then commit to work necessary for making any needed change.

The senseless killing of George Floyd is creating fear, hurt and outrage in Elgin, and those feelings are wholly justified. This is a city with no tolerance for racism, a city that instead strives for diversity and inclusion in all its many actions. We will continue to engage in the challenging conversations this tragedy demands, and in the end, Elgin will be better and stronger. This will be an even greater city.

Join me, my colleagues on the city council, the police department, and all other city staff in continuing the highest levels of responsible community engagement during these momentous times. Our commitment to do what’s right and best will ensure Elgin continues to be the welcoming home for the diverse residents and businesses in which we take such pride."
