ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 83: Hernandez Responds to Murder of George Floyd, Invites Community to Facebook Live Discussion on Racism

Zz

Illinois State House District 83 issued the following announcement on June 5.

AURORA, Ill. – State rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, released the following statement Friday:

“George Floyd was murdered by a police officer whose job was to protect lives, not take them. George Floyd’s death is not an isolated incident, but rather a result of a criminal justice system that was built on years of oppression. I am outraged, saddened and hurting for George Floyd’s family and for all those who suffer from the injustices of systemic racism. George Floyd deserves justice, and the officers who took his life must be held accountable. We must do more to make changes to the racist systems in our country that have failed people of color for far too long. We must continue to condemn racism, and work on ways to fully address it in all its forms. We need policies that address racial disparities in criminal justice, health care, housing and the economy. We need to continue to have conversations on this topic so we can call out racism, educate ourselves and amplify Black voices.”

Hernandez is hosting a virtual meeting to honor George Floyd and discuss ways to dismantle racism and lift up Black communities and other communities of color. The virtual meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 10 at 5:30 p.m. on Hernandez’s Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/RepHernandez83rd/.
