Illinois State House District 49 issued the following announcement on Jan. 13.
Through the end of January state Rep. Karina Villa, D-West Chicago, is hosting a “Kick the Cooties to the Curb” healthy classroom supply drive to stock local classrooms and keep students and teachers healthy and happy this cold and flu season.
“Illnesses like the flu can be very serious in children and keep them out of school for several days or weeks, causing them to fall behind,” said Villa. “Collecting healthy classroom supplies will help keep students healthy by helping teachers stop the spread of illness-causing germs which can travel very quickly, especially among children.”
Throughout the month of January Villa is hosting a “Kick the Cooties to the Curb” healthy classroom supply drive, and is collecting hand sanitizer, baby wipes and tissues to stock local classrooms during cold and flu season. Donations can be dropped off at Villa’s district office, located at 106 W. Wilson St., Suite 13 in Batavia, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
To stop the spread of the flu, which is currently considered to be widespread in Illinois by the Department of Public Health, Villa is urging parents and guardians to help their children establish the following healthy habits: getting vaccinated, covering coughs and sneezes, avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth, and washing your hands often.
“Keeping our students healthy means keeping them in the classroom where they belong,” continued Villa. “I encourage residents to consider donating healthy classroom supplies to my “Kick the Cooties to the Curb” donation drive to help keep our children and teachers healthy throughout the cold and flu season.”
