2. Roll Call

There were 6 members present at the meeting.

As there was not a quorum present, there was no motion to approve the minutes.

4. Approval of Agenda

As there was not a quorum present, there was no motion to approve the agenda.

5. Public Comment

Nathan Hastings visited the Youth Council to talk about an upcoming opportunity. He works with Aurora’s tech department, and is part of our Smart City initiative. He passed out flyers for the Smart Cities Youth Summit on Saturday, November 23rd. The Summit will be held at IMSA, bringing together the efforts Aurora and the 605 Innovation District to channel the creativity and minds of youth to design new ideas for a smart city in a “think-a-thon”. The event will bring together students from different schools to bring their ideas to life, while also knowing they will contribute to Aurora’s lasting future. Nathan also brought up the planned 605 Innovation District Youth Cabinet, a youth collective that will represent the schools of Aurora and function like the Youth Council, but with a stronger focus on making Aurora a smarter city.

6. Reports of Officers or Committees

None of the committees were able to meet this past month.

7. Unfinished Business

Diana Gonzalez joined the Youth STEM and Events Calendar committees.

Neha showed us her logo designs for the Youth Council, as well as her shirt designs through CustomInk. According to her estimates, 20 short-sleeved shirts for the council would be around $10 per shirt. The more shirts we order, the less the price per shirt. She also showed us designs and prices for custom stickers, water bottles, and business cards.

We created a Youth Council Gmail to coordinate communication with the Youth Council, use for our social medias, and serve as a hub for Youth Council documents.

We discussed the TEDxYOUTH @ IMSA conference, and our proposed sponsorship.

8. New Business

Matt brought up partnering with the city to build an ice rink for the area, like Aurora University. Dr. Holloway explained that we could support the idea, but don’t have the power as a Youth Council to solely back it. She also explained that other departments have discussed it previously, and considered different options. Right now, the most promising option is synthetic ice, which is portable and could be set up and dismantled easily to accommodate the changing seasons. However, this ice requires a specific type of skates, and dulls blades easily. If synthetic ice were used, the rink would offer rental skates.

Dr. Holloway talked about other developments in the works around the city.

Mohini asked what sustainability initiatives are already in place in the city. Dr. Holloway discussed how the city’s Sustainability Committee recently shared their annual report at a City Council meeting, and sent the report to the Youth Council.

9. Announcements

On April 22nd, 2020, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the Neighborhood Group Support Team is hosting a citywide cleanup on either April 18th, 2020, or April 25th, 2020. The Youth Council has participated in the cleanup in the past, where participants helped beautify Phillips Park. When we have a quorum at our next meeting, we will vote on joining the cleanup as a Youth Council.

10. Adjournment

Matt motioned to adjourn the meeting at 5:29 PM, Neha seconded.
