CITY OF BATAVIA: Sanitary Sewer Construction

Sanitarysewer

City of Batavia issued the following announcement on Nov. 15.

As part of the City of Batavia’s efforts to repair/replace aged and failing infrastructure, the City has contracted with two firms to replace the sanitary sewer diversion structure within the intersection of First St. and S. Van Nortwick Ave. Engineering Enterprises Inc. has been retained for design engineering and Performance Construction & Engineering as the contractor. In addition, redundant valves will be added to the force-main at Main St. & S. Van Nortwick Ave.

The failing diversion structure carries all wastewater from the entire NW sector of the City. Under normal conditions, wastewater is directed west of the intersection to the First St. Lift Station. However, in the event of pump failure or significant stormwater inflow, the structure can overflow to the southern basin, therefore lessening chances of sewage backups upstream of the First St. Lift Station.

Bypass pumping and construction mobilization is tentatively scheduled to begin Tuesday, November 19th with full construction tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, November 20th. S. Van Nortwick Ave. between Wilson St & Main Street will be opened only to local traffic while the entire intersection of First St. and S. Van Nortwick Ave. will be closed to thru traffic. Please follow the posted detour routes. We anticipate construction to be completed within 10 – 14 days.

For those of you that live or work in the area, you will notice large hoses along the curb lines on both S. Van Nortwick (north of the First St & S. Van Nortwick intersection) and First St. (west of S. Van Nortwick). Large pumps will be placed upstream (north) of the First St & S. Van Nortwick intersection to continue pushing the sewage just as the lift station currently functions. The pumps will be running 24/7, however the City specified the quietest pumps available. If your home or business driveway entries are within the scope of the bypass pumping, ramps will be placed at your driveway over the pipe to eliminate any disruption allowing constant access.

The City strives to minimize any inconvenience during this project. We truly appreciate your understanding and patience while we work hard to improve the infrastructure.
