Batavia Unified School District 101 students suspended 217 times in a single school year

Batavia Unified School District 101 reported 217 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 217 students during the year. That equates to 3.7 percent of the 5,851 students enrolled.

Of the 149 in-school suspensions, 128 were given to boys and 21 were given to girls, including 73 elementary or middle schoolers and 76 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 103 incidents. There were 21 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 102 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 68 out-of-school suspensions, including 32 elementary or middle schoolers and 36 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 27 incidents. There were 17 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 30 incidents, students were suspended for 3-5 days.
