Andrew Cuming, a business owner who has called Elgin home since 2010, is hoping to provide a better future for residents in the 43rd House District by challenging Rep. Anna Moeller (D-Elgin) and what Cuming sees as a re-election campaign to appease House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago).
"(Moeller) voted to increase our taxes ... provided no relief for homeowners, and voted to bail out Chicago on the backs of our schools," Cuming wrote in a statement announcing his candidacy. "I cannot sit idle any longer, as Anna is set on pillaging the pocketbooks of our residents and businesses to continue Illinois' fiscal mismanagement."
In an earlier bid for the Elgin City Council, Cuming branded himself as a candidate who "believe(s) in reducing spending and using technology to make the city more efficient," according to his candidate profile in The Daily Herald. He also wants to cut taxes, though unnecessary spending must come first, he writes.

Cuming is a graduate of Northwestern University's engineering school, and ran successful web design and property management companies before entering the political arena.
Moeller has served in the Illinois General Assembly since 2014 and recently drew ire from constituents by voting to raise the state income tax.
Moeller has been endorsed by Planned Parenthood and The National Association of Social Workers - Illinois Chapter, according to VoteSmart. She also has a legislative scorecard of 90 percent by the Illinois Parent Teacher Association, and 26 percent by the Technology and Manufacturing Association.
