Geneva officer honored for Special Olympics dedication

You might say Dan Kott has been carrying the torch for 25 years.

Kott, a Geneva Police sergeant, was honored recently with the Special Olympics Flame of Hope Award, the Illinois group’s highest honor, which is presented annually for dedicated participation in the Law Enforcement Torch Run, the City of Geneva announced.

Kott has spent a quarter of a decade dedicated to the Special Olympics Illinois.

“We are extremely proud of Sgt. Dan Kott for his contributions to Special Olympics,” Geneva Police Chief Eric Passarelli said. “Sgt. Kott’s selfless dedication to this important cause reflects very proudly on himself, the Geneva Police Department and the City of Geneva.”

Sgt. Kott has exemplified the spirit of volunteerism by donating many hours to Special Olympics events, including local fundraising activities — notably, a traditional Special Olympics pig roast originally established by former Geneva officer Keith Koza and his wife, Mary, the city said.

Keith Koza died in 2009, but Kott has continued to hold the event with contributions from Mary Koza and a local vendor, Josef’s Elegante Meats & Deli,

“Due to the generous contributions of time and financial support, the pig roast has continued to flourish today,” the city said.
