Art lovers have only a few more weeks to get a look at the Artwork from The Awakenings Project exhibit on display at Aurora City Hill until August 11.

The Awakenings Project, a grassroots nonprofit arts organization dedicated to supporting artists with mental illnesses, collaborated with the Aurora Public Art Commission to sponsor the show, which features the work of 16 artists.

On display is work by Peter Hallock Austin, Faith Burmania, Ryan Chacey, Sirene Christman, Trish Evers, Julie Hough, Kelsey Kowalski, Robert King Lundin, Sandy Jo Mazurek, William Eddie Nilan, Irene Lamb O’Neil, John Rakow, Mandy Rakow, Linda Stepanek, Kurt Taecker and Anton Witek.

Since 1996, The Awakenings Project has advocated for professional exposure of artists, encouraging those with mental illness to develop their artistic abilities while raising public awareness of their talent. In 2000 it launched a literary magazine called The Awakenings Review in a joint project with the University of Chicago, and in 2006 it won an award from the San Francisco-based Irwin Foundation for “Outstanding Contribution to Recovery by a Non-Profit Organization,” Kane County Connects reported via its outreach website.

The Awakenings Project operates a studio in Elgin, where artists can gather informally to share work space and solidarity, not only through the visual arts, but also via music, literature and drama.

City Hall is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
