He stated that he has learned more about the district’s long and rich history, more about the community we serve, and more about the many good communication efforts of those who preceded him. Mr. Jackson stated that the greatest treat so far has been the opportunity to visit the schools of District 131. He stated that long ago he learned that if you’re looking for great stories to tell, you need to go to where the energy is. And for our District, our energy is in the schools. It’s in the hearts and minds, the faces and the activities, of the students and those who teach there each day. He stated that it is clear that District 131 is: ? Greatly invested and celebrates the ethnicity of the school community; ? Is dedicated to providing a future-ready education to all of its students; ? Is proud of our students’ achievements in a variety of areas; ? Is filled with caring and incredible teachers who make a difference in the lives of children. Mr. Jackson stated that among his goals in the days ahead is to expand the number of stories we tell about these things that make our District special. It is also his vision to expand the WAYS in which we tell these stories. One of the ways will be the use of video. Mr. Jackson stated that our world communicates through the use of video now more than ever – through short, snack able segments that show AND tell. Mr. Jackson shared a two minute summary of how our District participated in the recent Fiestas Patrias parade, and why it was so important for students to be there. Appointment of Student Board Member Student board members, Emina Dzaferi and Laura Guida stepped forward and agreed to the following Oath of Office “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the ______________________________________________________________________________ Minutes of Regular Board of Education Meeting Monday, September 19, 2016 Members Present: Annette Johnson, Richard Leonard, Absent: Kirsten Strand Alex Arroyo, Kimberly Hatchett, Ken Darby, John Laesch ______________________________________________________________________________ 226 Office of Student Board Member of the Board of Education of School District 131, in accordance with the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution of the State of Illinois, and the laws of the State of Illinois, to the best of my ability. I further swear that; I shall respect and represent East Aurora’s student interest by serving as a faithful protector of that interest while serving as a student board member. I shall encourage and respect the free expression of opinion by my fellow students and others who want to express their ideas to me and promise to bring those ideas to the board for discussion”. Student board member Emina Dzaferfi read the following report: “In light of our new school year, the spirits in East Aurora High School have been through the roof! Everyone has been adjusting to the new school year very well and have definitely been so excited! In light of our school year starting and the football season as well, our first football game that was held at Aurora Christian on August 27th, was a win against Elgin! Our following football games were full of Tomcat pride, being that many student came out to support our teams! That atmosphere of school pride is definitely a recurring theme that could be felt at the Student and Police Forum which took place on September 1st, inside of the North Island Center. The Student and Police Forum was about “Taking Responsibility and Building Relationships” and definitely was what it said to be. The event brought together groups of students from West Aurora High School, Metea Valley High School, School District 304, students from Illinois Math and Science Academy, and students from East Aurora High School. The entire night was centered around informing and educating students on current issues that are present in our society today. One of the topics that was mentioned definitely helped to unify all the students as well as the officials together, in that one very room. When we broke off into our smaller group discussions with our schools, we were told to focus on issues that were prevalent in our school and how we could possibly fix them. One recurring topic that was stated, was the high school’s stigma. We have all heard rumors about East. However, can you attest that the wild rumors are true? Of course not, because they aren’t. East is a great high school that is filled with amazing opportunities and programs. Examples of this can be seen with our band program. Our band program tends to win multiple competitions, as well as our NJROTC program. For those of you who have seen musicals at East, you also know that our theater and choir is amazing. East is a high school that doesn’t compare to others because of how special we are. It’s time to embrace who we are and let others know that we are the “fighting tomcats” that are full of greatness. ______________________________________________________________________________ Minutes of Regular Board of Education Meeting Monday, September 19, 2016 Members Present: Annette Johnson, Richard Leonard, Absent: Kirsten Strand Alex Arroyo, Kimberly Hatchett, Ken Darby, John Laesch ______________________________________________________________________________ 227 Moreover, our East VS West Rivalry Week was a success! During the first week of September (6th-9th), our school experienced many different themes! We started off the week with a pajama day, following with a sea-of-red-day, a decade day, and we finished off with school pride! Many students participated in the event! During that week, we had also participated in a canned-good drive to help the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry, which was a success! Another major event that many of our East Aurora students participated in was the Fiestas Patrias Parade which was on Sunday, September 11th. Many of our students were marching with the band and NJROTC program throughout downtown Aurora for the annual parade from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Lastly, one major event that occurred this past weekend was the Aurora Youth Summit. The Aurora Youth Summit is an annual event that unites students from different schools that are in the area to increase the number of active adolescents in their communities and futures. This event entailed a variety of resources such as; scholarship information, job opportunities, information on FAFSA, and inspirational speakers. The Aurora Youth Summit is seen to have had another successful year, being that many students came out to get involved. The Aurora Youth Summit has only been around for 3 years. So, the event is steadily growing and definitely, has a great and strong foundation!” Student board member Laura Guido read the following “I'm very excited to be here and get a chance to speak this evening. Emina and I had the honored to be sworn into our positions officially!! I’m going to be talking about a few upcoming events for these next couple of weeks. First of all, I’d like to recognize the fact that the East Aurora Band is celebrating their 100th year anniversary. According to current band director, Brian Liska, the band appears to have been established in 1916. We are all very excited for this year’s show called Falling Through the Centuries to commemorate this special event. The band has been gaining huge recognition these past couple of years and growing in numbers. Although the high school has no field this year, the band has found a way around it and put together an amazing show. Next up, homecoming week!! This will occur the week of the 26th all through October 1st, and what would homecoming be without another spirit week?! To kick off the week, on Monday class colors will be worn for a friendly competition to see what grade has the best spirit. The next couple of days include tie dye Tuesday, neon workout Wednesday, tropical Thursday and finally end with the traditional red and black Friday. Throughout this week a series of events will be taking place: On Thursday September 29 the Homecoming Parade will occur after school and in the evening we’ll be hosting the Powderpuff Game, which is basically a football game but with girls in it. The Homecoming dance will be on Friday September 30th and this year’s theme is ______________________________________________________________________________ Minutes of Regular Board of Education Meeting Monday, September 19, 2016 Members Present: Annette Johnson, Richard Leonard, Absent: Kirsten Strand Alex Arroyo, Kimberly Hatchett, Ken Darby, John Laesch ______________________________________________________________________________ 228 under the sea! Lastly, homecoming week will conclude on Saturday October 1st with a football game at Aurora Christian. This will be a good chance to come out and see the band! To conclude, DECA’s 4th annual Forgotten Teens Car Show will take place this Saturday, September 24th from 9 am to 3 pm at the Goody’s on Farnsworth. DECA is a business club at East ran by Mr. Mark Lyons. The car show is one of the biggest community service events that the club hosts. I’ve had the honor to run this project for the last two years and presented it in front of judges at the DECA state competition. The project has gained recognition in the state’s top 10. The purpose for this project has been to raise as much money as possible that will later on provide Christmas presents for teens in our school who come from low income families. However, this year we have decided to dedicate the project to those students who are homeless. This is an issue that isn’t spoken about much but it is happening. We hope to be able to provide teens with a generous donation that will help them ease off any financial problems in time for the holidays. It would be great if you guys stopped by this Saturday and see the project for yourselves.” Public Comments Sue-z Bruno of 659 Garfield, Aurora, IL addressed the board. Diogene Gonzalez of 223 N. Sumner Avenue, Aurora, IL addressed the board. Mr. Gonzalez asked if the board talks to parents and students prior to transferring staff. He is concerned because the students got to know Mr. Crespo and he was removed quickly and with students at the high school age he stated that it is hard for them to trust teachers. Mrs. Hicks stated that the goal in the district should be to make sure that all students get a quality education. She stated that this has to be the focus. She represents the Christian ministry alliance and she stated that there were issues that they worked on last year and one of them were the PARCC assessments and the need to have parents involved to ensure that the tests are done fairly and that the process is done fairly. She further stated that there is due process and if the previous principal of the high school feels that he was treated unfairly he can follow this process. Mrs. Hicks also stated that the board and interim superintendents are doing a great job. Comments of Board Members Mr. John Laesch welcomed the new student board members. Mr. Laesch stated that it is not the board’s policy to speak publically on decisions made regarding employees. He thanked the parents for speaking before the board this evening and he thanked and appreciated the parent that stated that while he did not agree with the current administrative appointment at the high school he will continue to work with her and Mr. Laesch appreciates this spirit of collaboration. ______________________________________________________________________________ Minutes of Regular Board of Education Meeting Monday, September 19, 2016 Members Present: Annette Johnson, Richard Leonard, Absent: Kirsten Strand Alex Arroyo, Kimberly Hatchett, Ken Darby, John Laesch ______________________________________________________________________________ 230 Mr. Ken Darby welcomed the student board members as well.
