Nine Kane County townships are in need of citizens to anchor Republican precinct committees — Big Rock, Blackberry, Burlington, Hampshire, Kanesville, Plato, Rutland, Sugar Grove and Virgil Townships — with up to several vacancies in each jurisdiction.
Urging constituents to lend their time and skills, the Western Kane County Republican Organization said township political organizations have a rich history in the U.S., citing a historical book about Thomas Jefferson written by Alan Pell Crawford titled Twilight at Monticello — The Final Years of Thomas Jefferson.
In the book, Crawford described how activists in the nation’s northeast townships led effective opposition to the Embargo Act — a measure that was initially passed, but eventually repealed during Jefferson's second presidential term. The lesson taken is that when enough Americans join to advocate for an issue, they can create lasting impact on state and even national levels.
“True self-government, Jefferson believed, required the active participation of well-informed citizens,” Crawford said in the book. “Administration, by contrast, relied on a professional class of increasingly unaccountable government officials.”
Kane County constituents can claim their power and their voice well before Election Day by participating in politics at the local level.
