The Village announced on Nov. 20 that it is deploying Flock Safety cameras, also known as automatic license plate readers, at entry and exit points throughout the community.
The initiative aims to improve public safety and deter crime by monitoring vehicles associated with criminal investigations or missing persons. Fourteen cameras will be installed, each accompanied by warning signs to inform drivers of their presence.
According to the Village, these cameras are not being used to monitor vehicle registration status, driver violations such as seat belt or cell phone use, driver speed, or vehicle occupants. The system does not capture interior photographs nor function as a speed camera.
Instead, the primary uses include helping law enforcement identify stolen vehicles and those involved in reported criminal activities. The technology will also assist in locating vehicles connected to Amber Alerts and Silver Alerts involving missing persons.
The deployment of these cameras reflects a growing trend among municipalities seeking technological solutions to enhance community safety while clarifying the limits of surveillance.
