State Representative Dan Ugaste (R-Geneva) has responded to recent comments made by Governor Pritzker regarding the redrawing of Illinois’ congressional districts. The remarks came after a question about similar actions in Texas.

Rep. Ugaste criticized the Governor’s stance, stating, “So now the Governor wants to follow the rules? This is laughable. Illinois’ political maps, both for Congress and the State Legislature, are already so overly gerrymandered that it has silenced the voices of millions of voters.”

He further pointed out that Governor Pritzker had previously signed state legislative maps into law and questioned his current position on fairness in districting. “The Governor also said today we ought to stand up against cheating and be outraged. Well, where have you been, Governor?” Rep. Ugaste asked.

According to Rep. Ugaste, a non-partisan expert witness found 52 out of 118 current House districts not meeting constitutional requirements for being “compact, contiguous, and substantially equal in population.” He concluded by criticizing what he sees as selective outrage from the Governor: “The Governor’s selective outrage in this manner is ridiculous.”
