Test 02

Based on more than a decade of teaching information technology to Elgin Community College (ECC) students, professor Heidi Eaton recently earned the Post-secondary Teacher of the Year Award from the Illinois Business Education Association (IBEA).

Eaton was honored during the IBEA’s Nov. 8-10 conference in Springfield, where she also earned certification in Microsoft Word and Excel, according to a press release from Elgin Community College.

ECC President David Sam said in the release that Eaton’s student evaluations indicated she was “a fantastic teacher who exhibits dedication by her passion.”

The award recognized Eaton’s work as an instructor of computer science and office administration technology in the college’s digital technologies program, a position she has held since 2003. A past president of the ECC chapter’s American Association for Women in Community Colleges, Eaton is a faculty adviser for SkillsUSA, an organization that supports training for health and other technical careers.

Eaton has also received ECC’s Outstanding Service to the Community award and an Excellence in Teaching award from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development. The former legal secretary, technical writer and computer trainer also created a website for the Hampshire Fire Department, and serves as assistant coach for girls’ freshman basketball at Larkin High School in Elgin.

The IBEA conference drew some 100 teachers from secondary and post-secondary schools. Eaton has chaired committees for the group, as well as served as president in years past.
