Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) records show that 49.0 percent of East High School's (EHS) 2015 graduating class enrolled in college within 12 months of graduation.
The 2015 state average for students in public schools was 70 percent.
For EHS, its college enrollment rate marks an improvement over 2014, when 45.8 percent of its graduates chose post-secondary education.
Among other high schools in Kane County, the Class of 2015 college-enrollment rates at St. Charles East High School (72.0 percent) and Harry D. Jacobs High School (62.6 percent) were higher than that of EHS. Dundee-Crown High School (32.4 percent), West Aurora High School (30.6 percent) and Larkin High School (22.9 percent) were all lower.
The data, collected by the National Student Clearinghouse, includes two- and four-year colleges.
Enrollment at EHS in 2015 was 3,875; 708 (18.27 percent) were seniors.
ISBE said 19.4 percent of EHS seniors were "college ready" in 2015, vs. an average of 46 percent statewide.
All students who score a 21 or higher on the ACT qualify as "college ready."
EHS students did better in reading (17.0 percent) and English (35.6 percent), and worse in science (14.8) and math (15.5).
Only 6.9 percent of EHS students were college ready in all four subjects, ISBE said.
