St. Charles is set to commemorate Memorial Day on May 26 with a series of events aimed at honoring those who have served the nation. The day will feature cemetery ceremonies, a parade, a memorial service, and a community breakfast fundraiser.
“Let’s come together as a community to honor our fallen service members on Memorial Day,” stated Mayor Clint Hull. “It is so important to remember and show respect for all those who have sacrificed their lives in the service of our nation.”
This year introduces the “March of Honor,” an initiative inviting community members to participate in the parade as a tribute to over 1,300 veterans interred locally. “This Memorial Day, we’re starting a new tradition called the March of Honor,” said event organizer Lt. Colonel Mark Powell (Ret.). Participants are encouraged to bring an American flag and join at 9 a.m., at 6th & Walnut streets.
The day’s schedule begins with flag raising and cemetery ceremonies at 6 a.m., starting from Baker Community Center. Boy Scouts will lead these ceremonies across several cemeteries in St. Charles.
A Veterans Community Breakfast Fundraiser follows from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Baker Memorial Church, welcoming all for $5 per person while offering free entry for current and former service personnel as appreciation for their contributions.
The parade commences at 10 a.m., beginning from 6th and Main streets and concluding at Riverside Ave., followed by a memorial service at the Freedom Shrine along the riverbank near the former police department location.
In case of adverse weather conditions, indoor arrangements are made at St. Charles Fire Station 1 on N. Riverside Ave. The memorial service will feature Mayor Hull reading an Annual Proclamation alongside other ceremonial activities.
