Illinois State Representative Dan Ugaste called on May 5 for Governor J.B. Pritzker and Democratic lawmakers to work with House Republicans to address rising property taxes. Ugaste said that recent acknowledgment of the issue by the governor and key House Democrats followed sustained pressure from Republican legislators.
The matter is significant because many Illinois residents have seen their property taxes increase, prompting debate among state officials about possible solutions. Ugaste said that bipartisan cooperation is necessary to make meaningful progress.
“The Governor and prominent House Democrats finally acknowledged skyrocketing property taxes after House Republicans pushed the point to where it could not be ignored. If they are serious about making substantial inroads on the problem, they should include House Republicans to devise a workable solution. We have introduced many bills and proposed numerous solutions to tackle this issue,” Ugaste said.
Ugaste, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2019 to represent the state’s 65th House District, replacing previous state representative Steven Andersson, according to Ballotpedia.
As lawmakers continue discussions on how best to manage property tax rates in Illinois, further proposals from both parties are expected.
