The Village of Pingree Grove announced on Apr. 24 that a new subscription-based composting service will be available to interested residents beginning May 27.
The program aims to provide an option for residents who want to reduce landfill waste by composting food scraps and other accepted materials. This initiative reflects growing interest in sustainable waste management practices among local communities.
According to the announcement, the service includes collection, transportation, and composting of food scraps and other approved items. Residents who sign up will receive clean, sanitized five-gallon buckets that are swapped out at each pickup. The pickups are scheduled every other Wednesday at curbside locations.
Participants in the program are also eligible for a finished compost giveback, receiving one free bag of composted soil weighing between 12 and 15 pounds per year. This feature allows participants to benefit directly from their efforts in diverting organic waste from landfills.
Residents interested in learning more about the service can visit WasteNot at the upcoming Touch-a-Truck event on May 2. The event provides an opportunity for community members to ask questions and get more information about how the program works.
As communities continue seeking ways to minimize environmental impact, programs like this offer practical solutions for managing household waste while giving back useful resources such as nutrient-rich soil.
