Geneva Public Works announced on Mar. 25 that it will start flushing fire hydrants across the city in April as part of its regular maintenance program.
The hydrant flushing is intended to maintain water quality and ensure that all hydrants are functioning properly. According to the announcement, crews will flush hydrants from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, beginning Monday, April 6.
Residents are advised that while the water remains safe to drink during this process, they may notice some discoloration. The City recommends letting faucets run for a few minutes if discoloration occurs. Residents should also try to limit their water use and avoid doing laundry when crews are working in their neighborhood to prevent possible staining from rusty water. If laundry does become discolored, residents are encouraged to keep it wet and purchase a rust-removing solution packet from a local retailer.
To keep residents informed, signs will be posted in neighborhoods where flushing is taking place. A progress map showing which areas have been completed will also be available on the City’s website. The entire process is expected to take about three weeks, depending on weather conditions.
Hydrant flushing helps clear rust and sediment from water mains while ensuring that fire hydrants operate correctly. For further information about the program or specific questions, residents can contact James Childress, Geneva Public Works System Maintenance and Customer Service Supervisor.
