The City of Elgin’s public works department has announced a special on-street leaf collection from Monday, April 13 through Thursday, April 16. This extra service is intended to make up for the final pickup week that was canceled due to a winter storm. The collection will be available in the city’s four designated on-street collection areas.
Residents in these areas can begin raking leaves into the street starting Monday, April 6. The city asks residents not to place leaves in the street before this date, as early placement could block storm drains and create traffic hazards.
The city provided several guidelines for participation: “Rake leaves to the curb line only. Do not place leaves in traffic lanes. Keep piles free of branches, rocks and other debris. Do not block sidewalks, driveways or storm drains.”
In addition to leaf collection, Elgin’s citywide curbside yard waste and organics collection program will resume Wednesday, April 1. Residents can place yard waste in brown paper bags or carts on their regular waste and recycling days. This program is managed by Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS) and is available to all residents at no additional cost beyond regular waste and recycling service. Residents interested in receiving a free organics collection cart can sign up at elginil.gov/LRSElgin.
Street sweepers will also be operating throughout March and early April as weather allows. However, sweepers working before April 13 will not collect leaves. Street sweeping is part of ongoing seasonal maintenance aimed at keeping streets clean and protecting the stormwater system.
For further information about these services, residents are encouraged to dial 311 within Elgin or call 847-931-6001.
