The City of Geneva announced on March 6 that preparations continue for the East State Street (Route 38) reconstruction project, which will stretch from Glengarry Drive to the Fox River. The Illinois Department of Transportation is overseeing this multi-year effort, which includes widening the roadway, adding streetscape features, installing bike lanes, upgrading traffic signals, improving street lighting, and enhancing water main and storm drainage infrastructure.
The project is significant as it aims to improve transportation safety and infrastructure in a key corridor. Before major construction can begin, several utility companies are relocating underground infrastructure along East State Street.
According to the city’s update, Archon (AT&T) crews will shift their work zone from Kane to Kansas streets during the week of March 9. This will require an eastbound lane closure that will remain overnight. NPL (Nicor) has been conducting natural gas service work throughout the corridor, occasionally reducing traffic to one lane in each direction; these restrictions are lifted at the end of each workday. The city expects Nicor’s utility relocation efforts to conclude by mid-March.
HomeTowne Electric, a state subcontractor, has finished temporary signal installations and plans to activate them on Tuesday or Wednesday, March 10-11. Existing traffic signals on State Street will be removed those days with remaining equipment taken down later in the week. Temporary lane closures at intersections should be expected throughout this period. All construction activity remains weather-dependent and subject to change.
The full reconstruction is tentatively scheduled to start in spring 2026 and finish by late 2027, with final punch list items addressed the following year. The timeline depends on how quickly utility relocations are completed.
