The Illinois Department of Transportation plans to begin the East State Street (Route 38) reconstruction project in late March, weather permitting, according to a March 13 update from the City of Geneva.
The project is significant for local residents and commuters as it will involve major improvements along the state highway from Glengarry Drive to the Fox River. The multi-year effort includes widening the roadway, adding streetscape enhancements, installing bike lanes, upgrading traffic signals, improving street lighting, and updating water main and storm drainage infrastructure.
Recent utility work has included Archon (AT&T) crews working between Kane and Kansas streets, which will require an eastbound lane closure that remains overnight during the week of March 16. NPL (Nicor) will also have a small eastbound lane closure over the weekend between Sandholm and Simpson streets. This lane reduction will stay in place until work resumes on Monday, March 16. Nicor crews are expected to finish their utility relocation work by the end of March. HomeTowne Electric, a state subcontractor, recently activated temporary traffic signals and will return next week to address remaining tasks at intersections including Route 25, East Side Drive, and Glengarry Drive. Temporary lane closures may occur throughout this period.
All construction activity is dependent on weather conditions and subject to change. The full reconstruction project is scheduled for completion in late 2027 with final punch list items anticipated for the following year.
Residents can subscribe for road construction updates through Notify Me on the City’s website. The City said it will continue providing updates as new information becomes available from IDOT or utility companies.
