Clive Eric Cussler was born on July 15, 1931, in Aurora, Illinois. He was the son of Eric Edward Cussler and Amy Adeline Cussler. His early years in Aurora shaped his future interests. After his family moved to Alhambra, California, Cussler developed a keen interest in adventure and exploration. He began his career as an adventure novelist in 1965. His most famous creation is Dirk Pitt, a character featured in numerous best-selling novels. Cussler’s books frequently appeared on The New York Times fiction best-seller list, with over 20 titles making the list.

In addition to his writing career, Cussler was an underwater explorer. He founded the National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA), which discovered more than 60 shipwrecks and other significant underwater finds. His work with NUMA helped to uncover notable sites such as the RMS Carpathia, which rescued Titanic survivors, and the CSS Manassas, an important Civil War ironclad.

Cussler also worked in the advertising industry as a creative director. His commercials won several international awards, including one at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. He earned a Doctor of Letters degree in 1997 from the State University of New York Maritime College.

Cussler’s early life in Aurora and his subsequent achievements in literature and marine exploration remain significant. He passed away on February 24, 2020, in Paradise Valley, Arizona. His legacy continues through his novels and his contributions to underwater exploration.
