Kane County’s 16 cities reported median rates ranging from 0.9% in Algonquin to 3.2% in Carpentersville.

Their study finds a $1 million property, including $200,000 in fixtures, results in an annual tax of about $21,060, with rates varying from less than 1% up to 4% depending on the city.
Many states classify property types in ways that result in higher effective tax rates for commercial, industrial and apartment buildings compared to residential properties. In some cases, businesses may face rates several times higher than those levied on homes. For example, in Charleston, the commercial tax rate is roughly six times higher than that for residential property.
