Elgin, IL - Elgin’s on-street leaf collection program for residents living within the City’s four designated areas begins Monday, October 30 and is expected to run through Thursday, December 7 (weather permitting). The only exception is the week of Thanksgiving, and Thursday’s leaves will be collected on Saturday, November 25. View a map of the leaf pick-up locations and schedule.

Leaf pick-up generally begins when the majority of leaves are on the ground and runs for about four weeks. Prior to the start of leaf collection, community members on the Monday route may see leaf vacuuming machines in their neighborhood. City staff test the machines prior to use to ensure they are working properly.

To participate in leaf collection:

•    Rake leaves along the curb or edge of pavement by 6 a.m. on scheduled leaf collection day.

•    Keep sticks, branches and trash out of the leaf piles as these items may damage the leaf vacuum machine, which can slow down the process.

•    Avoid parking on the street to help ensure leaves can be picked up. If cars are blocking the piles, the leaf pick-up machine will not be able to collect the leaves.

Other Disposal Options

Citywide Leaf Collection

Between Thursday, October 30 and Friday, December 8, all Elgin residents may dispose of their leaves by placing them in yard waste bags and setting on curb for pick-up on their scheduled garbage collection day. During this time, no yard waste stickers are required.

Mulching

Residents also have the option to mulch their leaves. Mulching provides additional nutrients to the soil, which helps promote turf growth. View information about how to mulch.
