Businesses of all types in Elgin can now apply for funding for business upgrades that are needed amid the COVID-19 crisis through an effort by the Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin.

According to Jennifer Fukala, the association's executive director, the Downtown COVID Adaptation Grant Fund will financially assist companies with most of their safety-related expenses. These upgrades include the installation of plexiglass dividers and technology system upgrades.

"It's any project that helps them to better and more efficiently operate during the current circumstances, and also through the whole recovery period and ongoing," Fukala told the Daily Herald. "That will mean different things for different industries."

According to Fukala, the program has presently raised about $25,000. That's including $10,000 that was set aside from the Downtown Neighborhood Association's budget and $10,000 from Elgin's budget. The additional funds were raised using crowdfunding efforts and donors.

"I'm really excited about it," Fukala told the Daily Herald. "That's enough money to do something significant that can actually have a big impact."
