Those who pushed Trust Act need course on federal law, Ugaste says

Immigration

Dan Ugaste thinks Gov. Bruce Rauner and local lawmakers who voted to pass the Trust Act that turned Illinois into a "sanctuary state" may need a refresher course on federal law.

“Immigration is a federal issue, meaning state and local unions of government need to follow federal laws when it comes to such matters,” Ugaste told the Kane County Reporter. “I think we should repeal it. I honestly believe everything pertaining to such matters should start and end at the federal level.”

The recent acquittal of illegal immigrant Jose Ines Garcia Zarate in the 2015 killing of Kate Steinle in California has reignited the immigration debate, and Ugaste, who recently launched his campaign to replace retiring Rep. Steve Andersson (R-Geneva) in the 65th House District, can’t understand why Rauner would move to place Illinois squarely in the middle of it.

The political action committee Make America Great is now lumping Chicago with a number of other "sanctuary cities" it is pushing to have stripped of federal funding based on their refusal to work with federal immigration officials.

“I think maybe Dems were trying to cater to their base,” Ugaste said of them working with Rauner to pass the bill. “I don’t understand how states can do this. In the end, everyone is affected by it. I believe every piece of legislation that’s passed, at some point, comes to affect each and every one of us.”

An attorney by trade, Ugaste added he has grown weary with the level of abuse of power some argue is now rampant at both the state and federal level.

“I’m the father of three daughters,” he said as he discussed alarm about the growing number of sexual harassment complaints and allegations now be lodged against lawmakers across the country. “I honestly had no idea it was happening and the fact that it’s happening in the workplace is shocking. Here in Illinois, we have to have transparency and a full-time inspector general on hand to investigate all the complaints the office receives in an expedited manner.”

The 65th House District includes parts of Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles, Elgin and Huntley.
