Batavia FD responds to 39 fires in 2016

Batavia Fire Department responded to 292 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the Kane County Reporter.

The calls in Batavia included 39 fires - 19 structure fires, five vehicle fires and 12 other fires. The fire department also responded to three calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $152,600 in fire loss - or about $3,913 per fire.

The department also received 253 false calls, including three malicious calls and 250 other false calls.

One fire service member was injured in fire-related incidents and one was injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Batavia Firefighters' Pension Fund, which has 22 active employees and 15 retired or inactive employees, was $474,758 in debt as of December 2015, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $12,173 for every fire in 2016.
