The price of local government: City of Elgin

The City of Elgin budget was $296.35 million for its 2015 fiscal year, or $41,516.73 per household.

That's an increase of 2.5 percent from 2014, when the city spent $289.20 million, or $40,515.92 per household.

Elgin has 7,138 households and a population of 111,117.

Since 2001, the City of Elgin budget has grown by 277.4 percent, from $78.52 million. The city population has grown 17.1 percent over the same period, from 94,863.

Salaries accounted for 22.7 percent of city spending in 2015. Elgin property taxpayers paid $67.25 million for 648 full-time employees and 256 part-time employees.

In 2001, the city had 646 full-time employees and 152 part-time employees, and spent $57.72 million.
